I recently purchased the entire Mythical Realms collection of fantasy figurines from Safari Ltd., and since many of these creatures appear in my Savage Realms Gamebooks, what better way to show them off than by also sharing an excerpt.
This little snippet is from Balance of Fate: The Legorian Kings Saga…
Picking up an old, rusty broadsword from the ground, you begin calling out loudly, at the same time, banging on one of the temple’s supporting columns with the sword. Slipping the shield onto your arm and readying your weapon, you position yourself some distance away with your back to the entrance and wait.
Using the highly-polished surface of the shield as your eyes, you watch as, moments later, the medusa emerges from her temple lair ― her loathsome, living serpentine locks writhing upon her head as she drags her hideous, snake-like body over the debris and fallen rubble. Dagger-like talons and two rows of razor-sharp teeth complete the terrifying picture now mirrored in the shield before you.
Unable to pinpoint your exact whereabouts, the medusa begins to frantically search for you, quickly darting in between and around the statues of her many hapless victims with her scaly coils in tow. Even as you are watching in awestruck horror, the medusa wraps herself around the stone figure of an orc, and then, in a fit of rage, crushes it, sending pieces of it flying everywhere.
With your hand firmly upon your weapon, you brace yourself for the inevitable as the medusa unknowingly slithers towards your position. Closing your eyes firmly, you wait until she is nearly upon you, and then, with the shield raised, quickly pivot around to face her. There is the abrupt sound of rock cracking and splintering loudly, and then, silence. Slowly lowering your shield, you open your eyes to find that the reptilian hybrid-monstrosity is no more ― turned into solid stone by her own horrifying reflection!
